Henry Bradshaw Society
Collections of HBS Volumes
The Society receives frequent requests from members and other scholars
to advise in locating HBS publications. Since our volumes were not
publicly available until the 1980s (before that they were distributed only
to members of the Society) early numbers are particularly hard to find.
However, several major libraries were members of HBS from the early years.
The present page is a provisional listing of these.
A note of caution needs to be sounded before this page is used. It has
been compiled from surviving membership lists from the period
1891–1916. Membership lists from the 1890s are incomplete,
and those after 1900 do not always accurately reflect the full
picture — for instance, it is known that some libraries who
became members after the turn of the century joined retrospectively
and presumably acquired back-numbers. Nor of course can the
accuracy of the original listing be guaranteed. Some of the
institutions shown in the list have changed their names, or
amalgamated (no note is made of this). It is also the case that
some of these early institutional members have ceased to exist, and
their collections have been dispersed. (The latter is lamentably
true even of some libraries still in existence.) This listing is
therefore only a starting-point in locating HBS volumes, but we
hope that it will assist enquirers. If anyone using this list has
additional information about these or any other collections which
they consider it useful to incorporate here, please communicate it
to the Society's Secretary.
The annual lists used here date from 1891 to 1916. If there is no date
shown against a library, it appears in all the extant lists. One of the
above dates indicates that a library first appears in that year.
